World Cup matchday 17: England set the standard ahead of double-header

The tournament hosts made it three wins from four to go second in the table.

World Cup hosts England set the standard for their rivals to follow with a comprehensive eight-wicket defeat of the West Indies on Friday, bolstering their semi-final credentials with a third win from four.

The victory may have come at a cost, though, with captain Eoin Morgan (back spasms) and opener Jason Roy (hamstring) both suffering injuries in the field that ended their involvement in the game.

Four teams are in action on Saturday, all of whom will be hoping to put points on board without suffering similar setbacks. Australia can go top by beating Sri Lanka while South Africa need to see off Afghanistan to put their ailing campaign back on track.

Tweet of the day

Former England captain Michael Vaughan hails the class and consistency of the tournament's top run-scorer, Joe Root, who opened for the first time in his one-day career and made 100 not out.

Data point

Chris Gayle may not have been at his barnstorming best, but his 36 was still enough to see him become the top run scorer in ODIs between these sides, with 1,632. In doing so he overtook the great Sir Viv Richards' mark by 13, with both men having appeared 36 times in the fixture.

Coming up

Sri Lanka v Australia, The Oval (1030)

South Africa v Afghanistan, Cardiff (1330).

Weather watch

The forecast is good for The Oval but there is a more worrying prognosis for Sophia Gardens. The Proteas will be desperate to get a game in as they look to avoid a second consecutive washout.

One to watch

Kagiso Rabada will be hoping to make his mark on the tournament (Tim Goode/PA)

Kagiso Rabada has yet to light up the World Cup so far but South Africa's struggles mean they need a hero. At his best he has too much class for Afghanistan and he will be eager to make a statement with bag full of wickets.
