Jonathan Agnew: 'Australia batsmen were too ill-disciplined'

Australia's batsmen played too many loose shots on day one of the third Ashes Test, according to Jonathan Agnew.

Former England bowler Jonathan Agnew has criticised Australia's batsmen for their approach on the first day of the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

The visitors were bowled out for just 136, with James Anderson taking 6-47, before England moved onto 133-3 at the close of play, with Joe Root on 30 not out.

Agnew insisted that Australia's batsmen failed to read the conditions and played the wrong way.

He told BBC Sport: "On a surface like this, a batsman has to be disciplined, to make the bowler really work hard for their wickets. You have got to leave as much as you can, you have to really make that bowler feel under pressure to make you play.

"But Australia - and England to an extent later in the day - played some poor shots and were frequently the architects of their own downfall."

Australia won the second Test at Lord's to leave the series level at 1-1.
