Trevor Bayliss urges England to remain aggressive in Ashes series

England coach Trevor Bayliss insists that his side have to maintain their "mentally aggressive" approach used in their 169-run win over Australia in the first Ashes Test.

England coach Trevor Bayliss has urged Alastair Cook and his side to remain "mentally aggressive" against Australia in the Ashes series.

The Three Lions took a 1-0 lead in the series courtesy of a 169-run victory over Michael Clarke's men inside four days at Sophia Gardens.

Cook's men took the match to the Baggy Greens as they scored at a rapid rate with the bat to put the Australian bowlers on the back foot, and Bayliss has insisted that his team have to maintain their approach by playing their natural games.

He told reporters: "Cook is a calm operator and very well respected by the players in the team. He is obviously a fantastic batsman. I thought his approach in the first innings – even though he only got 20 – sent a bit of a message to the rest of the players.

"Most of the good captains around are not only leaders of the team but they lead the way in their attitude. My message to Alastair Cook is to go out and play his own way.

"Yes, we were talking as a group about being mentally aggressive, not necessarily trying to whack sixes and fours. But if you are mentally aggressive those boundary balls – when they do come along your feet are moving and you put them away."

The second Test starts on Thursday at Lord's.
