England have taken a 1-0 series lead in The Ashes thanks to a 169-run win over Australia in the first Test.

Australia were able to bowl England out just before the close of play on day three in Cardiff, giving themselves two days to score 412 and win the Test.

Had they managed it, it would have been a record run chase in The Ashes, but a fifth day wasn't even needed as England took all 10 wickets on day four.

After losing Chris Rogers (10) early on, David Warner and Steven Smith moved Australia along nicely in the morning, but Warner (52) fell in the last over before lunch to hand the initiative back to England.

The second session of the day is where England put themselves on the brink of victory. Five wickets - Smith (33), Michael Clarke (4), Adam Voges (1), Shane Watson (19) and Brad Haddin (7) - fell to leave just the Australian tail for the evening.

Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc provided some resistance after tea, but their eighth-wicket stand came to an end at 72 as Starc (17) edged a Joe Root delivery through to Adam Lyth.

Johnson scored 77 off just 94 balls before he fell in exactly the same manner as fellow left-armer Starc.

That left Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon at the crease and it was Moeen Ali who took the final wicket. Hazlewood (14) chipped the ball straight to Root, who fittingly took the winning catch after scores of 134 and 60 with the bat.

The second Test takes place next week at Lord's and starts in five days on Thursday.
