An unbeaten 178 from Joe Root has seen England open up a 566-run lead over Australia on day three of the second Ashes Test at Lord's.

The hosts started the morning on 31-3 before pushing on to 333-5 with two days remaining.

Tim Bresnan was the first wicket to fall when he was caught by Chris Rogers off the bowling of James Pattinson for 38.

Ian Bell then formed a solid partnership with Root and went on to make 74 before falling victim to Steve Smith.

However, it was undoubtedly Root's day as the 22-year-old smashed the visitors around the ground to help his side seize control of the match.

The Yorkshireman will be joined at the crease by Jonny Bairstow (11 not out) when play resumes on Sunday.
