Jonathan Trott admits that England's batsmen were guilty of giving their wickets away "softly" as the hosts surrendered a good position to close day one of the fourth Ashes Test on 238-9.

Jonathan Trott has admitted that England are frustrated with their position at the close of play on day one of the fourth Ashes Test following a sloppy middle-order collapse.

The Warwickshire batsman and captain Alastair Cook had guided the hosts to 107-1 but a poor evening session, which began with Ian Bell chipping Nathan Lyon to mid-off, saw England finish on 238-9.

Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann were also guilty of giving their wickets away, and Trott has hinted that a lack of application has resulted in England surrendering a good position.

"I felt pretty good to get to 49 and then got out but that's the nature of this game. As soon as you feel you are doing well it takes something away from you," he told reporters.

"Winning the toss and being 100 odd for one it's disappointing to then go and lose some soft wickets. We have to reassess that and put it right. Generally guys know what they have done wrong. I certainly know personally. It's up to individuals to put it right."

Tim Bresnan (12) and James Anderson (16) will resume unbeaten at the crease at the beginning of Saturday's play at Chester-le-Street.
