England bowl Australia out for 60 in the morning of their Ashes clash, Joe Root subsequently piling on the runs in the afternoon to give his side a 214-run lead at the close.

Australia were bowled out for 60 at Trent Bridge as England put themselves in a strong position to win The Ashes on the first day of the fourth Test.

Stuart Broad took 8-15 and Joe Root hit a century in Nottingham during what turned out to be the shortest first innings in Test history, the latter's unbeaten 124 going on to help the home nation to 274-4 at the close, a lead of 214.

Meanwhile Broad, playing in the city where he was born and plies his trade at club level, passed 300 wickets and equalled the fastest Test five-wicket haul of 19 deliveries as the tourists were ruthlessly dismissed in 111 balls.

In addition Alastair Cook scored 43 and Jonny Bairstow made 74, sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 173 at more than five runs an over with Yorkshire teammate Root.

Victory will give England an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series and see them regain the urn they lost following their 5-0 whitewash in Australia just under two years ago.
