England in deep trouble against Australia after day two at Lord's

England are reduced to 85-4 after Australia declare on 566-8 on day two of the second Ashes Test at Lord's.

Australia have put themselves in control of the second Ashes Test after tearing through England's top order on day two at Lord's.

The tourists had earlier declared on 566-8 before they reduced the hosts to 85-4 at the close of play.

Steve Smith was the star of the show for Australia as he made a career-best 215 to take them past the 550-run mark at tea. Captain Michael Clarke then allowed just one over to pass in the evening session when he called his players in.

England's time at the crease started disastrously as Adam Lyth was dismissed for a second-ball duck in the first over, with debutant Peter Nevill taking the catch off a Mitchell Starc delivery.

Gary Ballance was the next to go when Mitchell Johnson bowled him for 23 to leave the home side on 28-2. It got even worse in the next over as Josh Hazlewood struck to send Ian Bell back to the pavilion for one.

With England rattled, Joe Root then went out to accompany captain Alastair Cook at the crease, but he made just a single from four balls when he fell victim to the combination of Nevill and Johnson.

Cook (21*) and Ben Stokes (38*) managed to put up some resistance at the close of play and will resume out in the middle when play continues on Saturday.
