Cricket World Cup day 20: England bidding to avoid upset against Afghanistan

:Headline: Cricket World Cup day 20: England bidding to avoid upset against Afghanistan: ID:362269: from db_amp
The tournament hosts are looking to strengthen their grasp on the top four.

Old Trafford will play host to the World Cup's biggest mismatch, on paper at least, with hosts and world number ones England taking on an Afghanistan side who sit 10th in the rankings.

Little that has happened since the tournament began points towards an upset, with England boasting three wins from four and Afghanistan the only side yet to register a point.

Bangladesh's victory over the West Indies at Taunton was a minor upset to some but a reversal of the form book in Manchester would be a shock of the top order.

Afghan optimism will have been raised by the injury absence of Jason Roy, but England skipper Eoin Morgan is expected to play after back trouble.

Tweet of the day

Tigers fans added a welcome splash of colour to the stands, making a little corner of Somerset their own for the day.

One to watch

James Vince will open the batting against Afghanistan (Nigel French/PA)

James Vince expected to be lining up for Hampshire instead of taking part in England's bid to make history on home soil. Alex Hales' indiscretions opened up a place in the squad and Roy's injury has now created a vacancy at the top of the order. With a top score of 51 in his 10 caps to date, now would be an ideal time for Vince to announce himself.

Top run-scorers

  1. Shakib Al Hasan (Ban) - 379
  2. Aaron Finch (Aus) - 343
  3. Rohit Sharma (Ind) - 319

Data point

The Afghanistan leg-spinner has been the most prolific ODI wicket-taker of all since the 2015 World Cup, taking a scalp every 24 balls. He has proved less effective in England, though, with his strike-rate soaring.

What's next?

New Zealand v South Africa, Edgbaston (Jun 19).
