Sir Ian Botham: 'England have to improve to have success at World Cup'

Ian Botham insists that England have to change their approach to one-day cricket to have success at the World Cup following their poor start to the tournament.

Sir Ian Botham is adamant that England have got to improve if they are to stand any chance of having success at the World Cup.

Eoin Morgan's men were hammered by Australia and New Zealand in their opening two matches, and put in an unconvincing display in their victory over Scotland last time out, despite a century from Moeen Ali.

Former world-leading all-rounder Botham feels that England need to re-evaluate their one-day cricket ethos and adapt to new methods to match the stronger teams in the competition.

He told Sky Sports News: "You've got to think England will wake up at some point during this World Cup. You can't concede the runs they are conceding and they have got to be much more aggressive with the bat.

"The bowlers have got to bowl with some discipline and stick to the game plan. If you're going for 12 runs an over for the last 10 then there's something wrong.

"When you get the chance to dominate in this format you've got to be a lot more dynamic. We seem to think 275 is a good score when 340 on a good deck is only par in this World Cup."

England play Sri Lanka at Wellington in their next Pool A outing later today.
