Alex Hales admits that he is "embarrassed" by England's failure to reach the knockout phase of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

England one-day batsman Alex Hales has admitted that he and his teammates are "embarrassed" by the manner in which they slumped out of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Peter Moores's side finished fifth in Pool A after securing just two victories and suffering four defeats, resulting in them being sent home prior to the knockout phase.

Hales struggled for game time in the tournament and featured in just two games - against Bangladesh where he scored 27 and in England's victory over Afghanistan, where he came away with 37 runs.

"The skill level and standard of cricket we showed wasn't good enough and we are not hiding behind that," Hales told BBC Radio Nottingham. "I think all of us are embarrassed about what happened.

"The standards we set and the way we played was poor, but I really wanted to be involved from the start. Any time you get the chance to play for England is a great honour."

New Zealand will play either India or Australia in the final.
