England have made a disastrous start to their innings by losing Nick Compton, James Anderson and Jonathan Trott in quick succession in Ahmedabad.
The visitors switched to bat after the home side declared on 521-8 following a dominant performance from Cheteshwar Pujara, who secured a double century for India.
Compton, who made his Test debut with the bat for England, could only muster nine runs before being bowled out by Ravichandran Ashwin, who managed to hit the middle stump to end the 29-year-old's partnership with captain Alastair Cook.
James Anderson spent a minimal time at the crease after getting caught out by Gautam Gambhir at short leg following a bowl by Ojha, who managed to find Anderson's inside edge.
England found themselves in more trouble when Jonathan Trott was declared out for a duck after hitting the ball on his inside edge, which fell right into the hands of Pujara.
The tourists finished the day on 41-3 and will resume tomorrow to try to reach a total of 322 in order to avoid the follow-on.
