England's once-in-a-generation summer ended with Australia retaining the Ashes despite the home side's series-ending win at the Oval.
A 2-2 draw was not enough to win back the urn but conversely, England's fortunes in the limited-overs formats have never been better and they lifted the World Cup at Lord's in July.
