England started day two of the fourth Test against India on 199-5 following an even contest on Thursday in Nagpur.
Joe Root (73) and Matt Prior (57) both reached their half centuries in the morning session before the latter was bowled by the spin of Ravichandran Ashwin.
However, a fluent 56 from Graeme Swann guided England to a first innings total of 330 with India struggling to find much encouragement from the pitch despite figures of 4-69 from Piyush Chawla.
James Anderson made the difference towards the end of the day, taking three wickets as India limped to 87-4 at stumps to trail the tourists by 243 heading into the weekend.

Good morning everyone. It was a difficult day yesterday for both sides and to be honest, the spectators too. An old-fashioned day of Test cricket ended with England reaching 199-5 at stumps. The pitch is slow and it hasn't started to turn yet. However, England did themselves no favours in the batting department.
England will still be confident of posting a decent total while Root and Prior are at the crease. The duo will need to be more positive today but reports in Nagpur have suggested that 300 could be a good score on this pitch.
There's been plenty of criticism for this pitch too. Former India captain Bishan Bedi has said on Twitter: "Another disgraceful pitch in Nagpur - Indians may have to pay for myopic strategy- Dhoni welcome [to] dig own grave - why take Indian cricket along? BCCI silent?!"
Strong words from the legendary spinner but he makes a good point. India need a victory in this Test but selecting only one seamer on a poor pitch looks like it could cost them. Who knows? England look far from comfortable on this track too and this match really could go either way.
Root entered the Test arena for the first time yesterday and the 21-year-old handled himself very well in a difficult situation. His partnership with Prior will surely be the key for the tourists.
India's spinners did the damage in the afternoon yesterday despite the lack of turn. Poor decisions from Trott, Pietersen and the out-of-form Bell allowed India to take control before the current duo came together. Bell's place is beginning to come under pressure it seems and he may need to make a big contribution in the second innings.
So, here we go then. England need a big session but India will fancy their chances of wrapping up this innings quickly if they can break this partnership early this morning.
Root looks relaxed as he walks out to the pitch alongside Prior. India have a huddle before dispersing. Jadeja will bowl the first over of the day.
Prior brings up the 200 from the second ball with a prod onto the leg-side for a single. Root continues his work from yesterday by blocking out the remainder of Jadeja's over.
Sharma will begin with the ball from the other end. Another spell like yesterday morning and India will be very happy.
Prior wasn't offered much room by Sharma yesterday and India's only seamer has started well again, bringing the ball back into England's wicket-keeper nicely. A little bit of width allows Prior to cut the ball to third man for a single before Root has his first run of the day with a push to point.
Dhoni brings in a short leg for Root but the Yorkshire batsman is much more eager to work the ball onto the off-side, picking up two runs with a thick edge to third man. Good over from Jadeja but still no signs of any dramatic turn.
Prior isn't being given the freedom he craves outside off-stump by Sharma. Six almost identical deliveries result in a maiden over and for the second morning in a row, England have started cautiously.
Good cricket from Root as he nudges the ball onto the leg-side to sneak a single midway through Jadeja's over. An inside edge from Prior has India excited but he's safe.
Superb shot from Root as he latches onto a bit of width from Sharma to guide the ball through the covers for three runs. Another sign of how slow this pitch is as Prior edges a ball short of Dhoni and the England batsman has four runs for his trouble.
Root's forward defence is as textbook as you will see in cricket these days. A potential maiden over is spoiled when Root sneaks a single with a nudge onto the leg-side from the final ball.
First bowling change of the morning as Chawla comes on to replace Sharma. Not much happening for the burl spinner though and he concedes a boundary when Root rocks back to cut the ball behind point for four runs.
Prior attempts the cut shot early in the over but can only pick out the fielder. A shorter ball from Jadeja allows Prior to try the same shot and he has four runs this time. Big runs for England.
Root takes a single from the start of Chawla's over with a push to deep cover. Sehwag is at slip but when Prior does edge the ball, it falls well short of the fielder. Chawla sends down a quicker ball but Prior reacts well to collect two runs with a flick to fine leg.
Ojha is into the attack for the first time this morning but he allows Root to immediately get off strike with a single from a loose short ball. Prior tries to pick the gap at cover but Pujara does well to get down and block the drive. Just a single from the over.
Good running from the England duo as Root pushes the ball into a space on the off-side for a quick single before rotates the strike again with a nudge to square leg. Chawla is too short again, allowing Root to flick the ball off his pads and Prior then cuts the ball to deep cover to make it four from the over.
It's been a cautious but good start from England start this morning. This partnership is now worth 90 and these could be very valuable runs.
Much better start to the over from Ojha as he adjusts his length well to keep Prior pinned to the crease. There's the slightest hint of turn but it makes no difference as Prior moves to Fifty with a cut to the point boundary. Good innings and that half century could be very important as this game progresses.
Just to make this match a bit more old fashioned, both England players are now wearing caps instead of helmets. A Chawla delivery midway through the over keeps low and Root does well to keep the ball out. A flick to square leg brings a single before Prior hands the strike back to his partner with yet another cut shot.
Ojha continues and wastes no time in speeding through a maiden over. Not much on offer for a spinner who's looked so dangerous in this series.
India's fourth spinner comes on as Ashwin replaces Chawla. Root opens the face to earn a single to point before Prior stretches to drive the ball through cover for three runs and that's the century partnership. Root then brings up his half century on debut with a sweep shot for a single. Superb innings under real pressure from the 21-year-old.
Ojha finishes off the first hour of the day with a maiden over and it's time for a drinks break. Very promising start from England.
Ashwin continues following a length drinks break, which seems to be the trend in this match. Root takes a single with a flick to fine leg.

Big breakthrough for India as Ashwin sneaks the ball through Prior's defence with a slightly quicker delivery. Great knock from England's wicketkeeper but he's be disappointed at missing a ball that did very little. Tim Bresnan is in next for England.
Root's role becomes even more important following that dismissal and he proceeds to block out Ojha's over for a maiden, meaning Bresnan will be on strike to Ashwin.
Bresnan won't be on strike to Ashwin as Dhoni brings the spinner on immediately after taking a wicket. Sharma is back but I'm not sure how happy Ashwin will be at fine leg.

The change works for Dhoni! Sharma brings one back into Bresnan's pads and the new batsman plays all around the ball, leaving Mr Dharamasena with the simple task of raising his finger. Dhoni gets it right and Graeme Swann heads out to the middle.
Sharma is running in with good rhythm now but Swann defends his first three deliveries well before getting off the mark by whipping the ball through mid-wicket for four runs.
Ashwin remains out of the attack as Ojha continues his spell. Root drops to one knee to delicately sweep the ball to the fine leg boundary rope for four, great shot. Good cricket from Root as he sneaks a single from the last ball of the over to keep the strike.
Soft hands from Root allows him to guide Sharma's first ball to third man for a single. Swann middles two drives but Pujara prevent the new batsman from collecting any runs with some good fielding.
Root sweeps the ball into the air on the off-side and good running means he adds three runs to his total. Swann uses his feet well to negate the minimal turn Ojha is getting from the pitch before a thick outside edge brings the number nine four runs.
Root blocks early on in Sharma's over before nudging the ball to cover for a single. India plead for lbw against Swann but the ball is clearly going past leg stump when it strikes the pads.
Ojha is excited when Swann wildly swings at the ball outside off stump but luckily for the England batsman, there's no edge. A big shot comes again later in the over and Swann has four runs over mid-wicket.
Ashwin is back to replace Sharma just before lunch. Root attempts the reverse sweep but he can only hit Dhoni on the pads with the improvisation. Good return from Ashwin and it's a maiden over.
Jadeja returns for a new spell and he almost sneaks the ball underneath Swann's bat with one that keeps low midway through the over. It's another maiden, Jadeja's 14th from 31 overs.
Good running from England as Root pushes hard to earn two with a nudge just behind square on the leg-side. A single to third man brings Swann on strike and he adds two more with a push to deep cover. Root survives a close run out call when Kohli hits the stumps following Swann's call for a single. Third umpire quickly confirms the decision and Root is safe.
Jadeja begins the over well and has Swann shuffling on the crease but a big gap at mid-wicket attracts England's number nine and a huge shot brings four more runs.
Root pushes Ashwin's second ball to third man to get off strike and that's the only blemish in an otherwise very good over. Another good partnership developing for England.
More stubborn defence shown by Root in Jadeja's maiden over and the Yorkshire ace just won't be forced into playing a false shot.
Sharma comes on for what may be the last over before lunch and he finds a little bit of extra bounce to strike Swann on the inner thigh pad but Root does well to call for a leg bye. Root is once again solid in defence and he blocks out the over to end the session.
Lunch: England reach the end of the first session without the loss of any more wickets and England may be quietly happy with their work. The loss of Prior was a big hit but Root is looking superb on debut and he is currently 65* alongside Swann, who has 19.
India took two big wickets and will be confident of wrapping this innings up but England are edging closer to 300 and that could be a good score on this pitch.

Welcome back everyone. Root continues to impress us with his debut performance but reaching three figures at some point today would be the kind of thing dreams are made of. His knock has been crucial for England as they close in on 300.
Sharma continues to look the most threatening of the India bowlers but the lack of a second seamer seems to be counting against the hosts.
Root proves that England's future is bright, with the 21-year-old keeping out the likes of Bairstow, Morgan and Taylor.
The players are back out on the field of play and India need three wickets very quickly. Dhoni must not allow his bowlers to concede cheap runs in this session. Jadeja will bowl the first over following the break.
Jadeja starts very full to Swann but England's number 9 is equal to the threat and blocks out a maiden over.
Ashwin takes the ball from the other end and he begins round the wicket to Root, who punches a full toss down the ground for a single before Swann hands the strike back to his partner. Ashwin strays onto Root's pads, allowing the Yorkshire ace to flick the ball to fine leg for a single.
Root is back to his comfort zone against Jadeja, playing six forward defensive shots to play out a maiden. The debutant has faced 211 balls for his 67 runs.
Just the one over after lunch for Ashwin as Sharma comes back into the attack. Swann likes to stay leg-side of the ball but he isn't offered enough width to work the ball through the covers. A rarity in Test cricket as Sharma delivers a slower ball yorker but Swann does well to block the ball at his toes. A single towards the over means Swann gets off strike and Sharma has a very optimistic call for lbw rejected.
Jadeja continues and he has his head in his hands when a thick outside edge allows Swann to collect two runs to third man. Swann takes a single from the final ball to keep the strike and he is looking very relaxed at the crease.
Swann gives the strike to Root at the start of Sharma's over and the Yorkshire opener misses out when he fails to make contact with a wider delivery. Good fielding from Kohli at point to prevent Root from earning a run and it's just a single from the over.
Good shot from Swann as he picks the gap at mid-wicket to collect two runs and it's an even better strike from England's number nine as he slogs the ball over the same area for a huge six. Big shot and this is a very valuable knock from Swann.
Ashwin is back but he's slightly too full to Root from round the wicket and there's an easy single on offer at fine leg. Big bounce from Ashwin to surprise Swann and the next delivery is even better as he beats the outside edge. Swann keeps the strike with a nudge to fine leg.
Chawla returns for a new spell and replaces Jadeja. Swann gets off strike as the ball clips his bat during an attempted leave. Four runs for Root through mid-wicket as he sweeps powerfully to bring up the 300 for England.
Swann nudges Ashwin down the ground early in the over for a single. Root then rocks back to keep out a flatter delivery from the spinner before a clip off the pads brings him a run and allows him to keep the strike.

No century for Root as he offers a leading edge straight to Chawla at the beginning of the new over. The spinner takes a simple catch and that's the big wicket for India. Superb innings on debut from Root, he's bitterly disappointed with himself but that knock could be very significant.
Anderson is the new batsman but he gets off strike with a leg bye from his first ball. Swann may attack India's bowlers now but he can't pick the gap straight away, finding Pujara with a cover drive. However, he then clubs the ball down the ground and has four runs to move to 40.
Tendulkar does well at backward point to stop Anderson finding the boundary rope with a cut shot but the new batsman is off strike with a nudge to fine leg. Swann lofts the ball in the air once again but he doesn't make great contact and just picks up two runs this time.
Anderson takes advantage of some width to push the ball through the covers for a single, bringing Swann on strike midway through the over. Dhoni shows his skills behind the stumps as he chips up an attempted reverse sweep to play 'keepy-ups' for a moment. Swann the punches the ball to long-on for a single to keep the strike.
A push to mid-off should just be a single but a poor throw from Chawla allows Swann to add an extra run to his total. A couple of steps down the track and a loft straight down the ground results in four runs and Swann then brings up his half century with a push onto the off-side. Superb knock at a very important time from Swann and that's his first fifty for three years.
Chawla completely deceives Swann with a googly but the lbw appeal is quickly rejected by Rod Tucker. Swann then attacks again, clearing the boundary rope with a huge straight six.

Swann's exciting innings comes to an end as he misses a reverse sweep and Tucker is convinced that the ball would have clipped leg stump. Chawla has his man and it's just Panesar left for England.
Panesar blocks out the final two balls of Chawla's over. India will be disappointed with the amount of runs Swann has added but England will be delighted with that innings.
Anderson clips Ashwin's first ball to mid-wicket for a single before Panesar nudges the ball to mid-on for a hurried run to get off the mark. Good cricket from Anderson as he takes advantage of the fielder's position at mid-on to pick up another single before Panesar blocks the final two deliveries.
Anderson barely plays a shot at one on his pads but England still gain two leg byes.

England's innings comes to an end as Anderson becomes the final batsman to be dismissed. The number 10 tries to work the ball onto the leg side but his nudge goes straight to Pujara, who takes a superb catch at short leg. Chawla ends with four wickets but India might feel they have let England get too many runs.
The contributions of Root and Swann have been crucial for England this morning. India have done well but it's unclear how good a score 330 is on this slow pitch. The hosts must start their innings well if they are to take control of this match.
England have had to be patient because scoring on this pitch has not been easy. India may adjust slightly better to the home conditions but England's decision to play two seamers looks a good call.
Chawla finished with figures of 4-69 while Sharma supported well with 3-49 and Jadeja impressed on his debut with 2-58. Ashwin took one wicket but Ojha didn't make a breakthrough.
Sehwag and Gambhir are walking out of the dressing room now and the England players look ready to begin the innings. Big period of play before tea and India will be desperate to make it to the end of this session without the loss of a wicket.
Predictably, it will be Anderson who opens the bowling for England.
Gambhir is off the mark immediately with a flick to fine leg before Prior is forced to dive down leg-side to prevent four byes.

What a start for England! Anderson brings one back just enough to burst through Sehwag's defence and knock over middle stump. Superb delivery and it's a massive wicket for England.
Pujara comes to the crease with all the pressure in the world on his shoulders and he is met with some early swing but defends well. A clip through mid-wicket brings the new batsman two runs but he looks uncomfortable when Anderson fires in a sharp bouncer. Great over from the leader of England's attack.
Bresnan takes the new ball from the other end and he starts well, beating Gambhir's outside edge midway through the over. The left-hander takes advantage of a stray delivery to push the ball to square leg for a single before Bresnan has an optimistic lbw appeal rejected.
Gambhir once again takes a single to square leg to bring Pujara on strike and the number three finds the boundary for the first time in this innings with a push behind point. Root's reward for his brilliant innings is to field at short leg. Pujara picks up another run with a clip to fine leg and it's six from the over.
Bresnan begins his over well but he goes to full and allows Pujara to pick up another run to Panesar at fine leg. Just the single from the over, expect some cautious batting from this pair.
Anderson looks in good rhythm early on here and he'll be dangerous when the ball does reverse swing. Pujara gets in behind the ball well to play a couple of good defensive shots before picking out Compton at point with an open faced shot. It's a maiden over from Anderson.
Good stop from Pietersen at cover to keep Gambhir on strike at the start of Bresnan's over. However, Bresnan is too wide a ball later and Gambhir crunches a cover drive for four runs. Cook may be wise to give one of his spinners an early go with the harder ball.
Pujara chips the ball into the air through cover but it's safe and he is able to pick up two runs for his trouble. A cut shot is close to bringing Anderson his second wicket, with Pujara inches away from dragging the ball onto his stumps. Too full from Anderson later in the over and Pujara punches the ball through cover for four runs.
Bresnan's short spell does come to an end as he makes way for the spin of Panesar.
Panesar immediately finds the right length to Pujara but there still isn't much turn for the spinner on this pitch. Maiden over and we're just over 10 minutes away from tea.
Great timing from Gambhir as he drives Anderson through the covers for four runs. England's opening bowler is round the wicket to the left-hander now and almost sneaks one underneath the bat. A thick inside edge brings Gambhir one more and it;s five from Anderson's over.
Gambhir shows his intent as he takes a couple of steps down the pitch to launch Panesar over long-on for four runs. Nice footwork once again from Gambhir but a punch down the ground only brings the opener a single.
Swann comes on to replace Anderson with tea fast approaching. Gambhir attempts to work the ball onto the off-side but Compton fields well at short cover. It's a maiden from Swann and there should be time for one more over in this session.
Bell does well at cover to keep Pujara on strike at the start of Panesar's new over. Signs of some turn as the ball strike the shoulder of Pujara's bat but he survives and that's the end of the session.
Tea: England will be happy with their start in the field after Anderson removed Sehwag in the first over of the innings. Pujara and Gambhir look in good touch but the real test will come when the ball begins to reverse swing.
If England take one more wicket this evening, they will expose a middle order who are in desperate need of runs. Tendulkar, Kohli and co will be under pressure if this partnership doesn't last until stumps.
Pujara has looked in good touch since arriving at the crease and we've already seen that he has the capability of playing the big innings. Massive session coming up for both sides.

Great start from Bresnan as he beats Gambhir's outside edge with the first ball of the over. The left-hander does pick up a single from the third ball and a leg bye adds another to India's total.
Pujara just offers his pad to one outside off stump, prompting a big appeal for lbw from the England players but umpire Dharmasena quickly shakes his head. Three runs for Pujara when he beats Anderson at mid-off but a good recovery prevents the boundary. Gambhir adds two more runs with a clip to fine leg, five from the over.
Bresnan strays onto the pads first ball, allowing Pujara to collect a single to fine leg before Gambhir rotates the strike again with a nudge to square leg. Four runs for Pujara when he gets on top of a bouncer to pull the ball through mid-wicket.
Panesar continues but he allows Gambhir to get off strike at the start of the over. Pujara prods the ball straight to Root at silly point but the fielder can't react in time to take the catch. Just a single from the over.
Bresnan finds some movement to beat Gambhir's outside edge from just back of a length. It's a good over from the Yorkshire seamer, who targets Gambhir's stumps but the left-handed batsman is off strike with a push to mid-wicket.
Panesar finds some uneven bounce and he's unlucky not to find an edge with Gambhir attempting the cut shot. A single brings Pujara on strike and he blocks out the over.
Bresnan finds the edge but it drops well short of Prior and Gambhir has four runs to bring up the fifty partnership. A thick outside edge then brings Pujara on strike but adds one more to India's total with a leg bye.
There's beginning to be some signs of reverse swing but India have played very well since Sehwag's dismissal. A wicket before the close is crucial for England.
Pujara and Gambhir trade singles at the beginning of Panesar's new over. The former calls for a run later in the over but a poor throw from Root means there's no chance of a run out.
India currently trail by 276.
Swann comes on to replace Bresnan and England need a bit of magic from their front line spinner. Pujara takes a single from the start of the over to bring Gambhir on strike. Swann finds a bit of turn but it's not enough to worry the left-hander.
Not too much happening for England since the tea break and Panesar doesn't look threatening, despite bowling a maiden to Pujara.
Brilliant fielding from Root on the off-side to restrict Gambhir to just a single at the start of Swann's over.

Big stroke of luck for England! Bell takes a superb catch at short leg but replays show that the ball had hit Pujara on the elbow and pad, rather than the glove. Tendulkar in next but that could be a big moment in the game.
Tendulkar survives the remaining balls in Swann's over and India need something special from the little master.
Gambhir flicks Panesar away midway through the over to collect a single, bringing the new batsman on strike. Big turn just outside off stump but Tendulkar thinks twice about hanging his bat out. Another beauty from Panesar as he beats the outside edge by a couple of centimetres.
Anderson shows his ability in the field at point to keep Gambhir on strike at the beginning of Swann's over. Good from Swann as he bowls a maiden, meaning Panesar will get another go at Tendulkar.
Tendulkar drives on the up through the off-side but Compton keeps the legendary batsman on zero for now. The 39-year-old does get off the mark later in the over with a single to point before Gambhir rushes through a run with a nudge onto the leg-side.
Swann delivers an absolute beauty to Gambhir and catches the inside edge but a deflection onto the pad makes it impossible for Prior to take the catch behind the stumps. Gambhir is beginning to look a bit scratchy at the crease but his attempts to get off strike are destroyed by a great Swann over.
It's time for the players to take a drinks break as we head into the final hour of the day.
Anderson will take the ball following that break and he'll fancy his chances of a wicket given his record against Tendulkar.
Very little foot movement from Tendulkar but he gets off strike with a thick edge to third man before he has the strike back following a bye down the leg-side.

Anderson removes Tendulkar again! A straight ball keeps low and Tendulkar can only edge the ball onto his own stumps. The Indian fans are in shock as Kohli walks out to the crease. That's the ninth time Anderson has removed Tendulkar in Test cricket and that's more than any other bowler.
Gambhir is still battling away as he takes a single from the start of Swann's new over to bring Kohli on strike. The new batsman is off the mark with three runs through the off-side. England are on top of this game now.
Anderson begins a new over and there's a big smile on his face when Kohli has a wild swing at the ball outside off stump. Prior does very well to stop a delivery that rolls on the ground at pace before Anderson beats the outside edge with a superb delivery. Brilliant fats bowling from the Lancashire ace.
Gambhir is riding his luck a little bit by playing the cut shot so close to his own stumps and he almost drags on in the over. Root chases another Gambhir cut shot to prevent a boundary later in the over, with the Indian pair running three. India still trail by 259 runs.

India are in big trouble now. Anderson begins his over superbly, fooling Gambhir by swinging the ball both ways before taking the outside edge to leave Prior with the simple task of catching the ball behind the stumps. It's Dhoni who comes in next, rather than Jadeja.
Slice of luck for Dhoni first ball as he drags the ball just beyond his own stumps. Great over from Anderson and it's been a superb spell of swing bowling.
Panesar is back for a new spell, replacing Swann. Dhoni gets off strike with a flick onto the leg-side and Kohli plays the same shot a couple of balls later. India have only scored 16 runs in the last 11 overs.
Kohli nudges the ball off his hip at the start of Anderson's new over but the bowler won't mind having a go at Dhoni. India's skipper is intent on playing back but that's a dangerous game on this pitch and he doesn't look confident about which way the ball is moving.
Kohli looks more comfortable against the slow bowling of Panesar but he can only block out an excellent maiden over. India need a big contribution from one of these players.
Bresnan comes on to give Anderson a well deserved and this is good captaincy from Cook. There's a plea from Bresnan for lbw but the ball is sliding down leg when it strikes Dhoni on the pad. India's captain then has four runs but in fortunate fashion as he chips the ball just wide of substitute fielder Jonny Bairstow at cover.
Nice shot from Kohli as he whips the ball through mid-wicket for two runs but there's a good response from Panesar with five dot balls in a row.
Really good over from Bresnan again as he keeps a tight line just outside off stump to Dhoni, who lives life dangerously with a couple of mistimed cut shots. The Indian duo trade singles from the final two balls in the over.
Too short from Panesar and Kohli takes advantage by picking up two runs through mid-wicket. The spinner seems to be finding more turn as the game progresses and he could be a key player tomorrow.
Bresnan isn't finding as much swing but his accuracy is still a concern to Dhoni. It's a maiden and there could be just one more over left in the day.
Cook decides for something a bit different for the final over as Trott is given a bowl to possibly test the Indian duo's concentration. Kohli takes a single with a push through the covers before Dhoni collects a run in the same area to end the scoring for the day.
Close of play: A first series victory in India for 27 years is getting closer for England following that brilliant performance. Root and Swann were the heroes this morning but a fantastic display of swing bowling from Anderson means India are still 243 runs behind.
India will need something special from one of their players tomorrow if they are to somehow set up a victory in this match but at this point, 3-1 to England looks more likely than 2-2.
