Former Yorkshire and England captain Brian Close has passed away at the age of 84.

The all-rounder played first-class cricket for almost 30 years, with his career spanning four decades from 1948 to 1977.

Close is the youngest man to play Test cricket for England, making his debut at the age of 18 in 1949. He would go on to play 22 Tests, with his final cap coming against the West Indies in 1976.

Close captained Yorkshire to four County Championship titles before going on to lead Somerset in the 1970s. He also captained England on seven occasions, winning six and drawing one of his games as skipper.

After retiring from playing, he had a stint as an England selector between 1979 and 1981 and was later elected to the Yorkshire committee.

Close scored 34,994 runs with the bat, including 52 centuries, and took 1,168 dismissals as a bowler.
