Stuart Broad "had no idea" he had taken hat-trick

Stuart Broad admits that it took him a while to realise that he had become the first Englishman to take two Test hat-tricks, in the second Test against Sri Lanka.

Stuart Broad did not realise that he had taken a hat-trick when he made history by becoming the first Englishman to do so twice in Tests, against Sri Lanka on Friday.

The Nottinghamshire seamer took three wickets in three balls to help England dismiss the Lions for 257 and close day one of the second Test 221 runs behind.

Broad's trio of victims were separated by the end of an over and therefore it did not dawn on the 27-year-old what he had achieved until it was announced over the loudspeaker at Headingley.

"I had no idea," he told Sky Sports News. "I was listening to the guy that came on the tannoy there and I was thinking 'why is he mentioning the last ball of the over before?', and it clicked that that might be a hat-trick."

Broad is now one of only four bowlers to take two hat-tricks in Test cricket, with Pakistan left-armer Wasim Akram and pre-war Australians Hugh Trumble and Jimmy Matthews the others.
