England duo Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann made an unsuccessful return to County Championship cricket with Nottinghamshire against Lancashire today.
Broad was dismissed for a golden duck by Simon Kerrigan while Swann was trapped lbw by the same bowler for just five at Old Trafford.
When they were given a chance with the ball later in proceedings, both were wicketless as the hosts closed on 48-0 after earlier bowling Notts out for 169.
It was the first time the pair had represented their county this season following their commitments to the national side.
Another England player, Samit Patel, made his case for a place in the Test team to face the West Indies later this month with a stubborn knock of 69.
