Stuart Broad says that England and South Africa are playing a "very even" match as they head into day three of the first Test.

Stuart Broad has said that England and South Africa are playing on level terms as they go into day three of the first Test in Durban.

The 29-year-old helped the tourists to 303 all out in the first innings - ending on 32 not out himself - then took 3-16 with the ball to leave South Africa 137-4 at stumps on day two.

"It's very even I think. The first hour and a half tomorrow is going to be crucial," Broad told Sky Sports News. "We have certainly got to aim for a first-innings lead but that will be hard work.

"We got [past] 300 - it's competitive, especially after yesterday, I thought that was a great effort from our batters to play like they did, with quite heavy overcast skies, that could have easily been a 160 all out.

"So we're fighting hard, we're okay, but we're still seeking to take all of our chances and stay in this game."

Dean Elgar (67*) and Temba Bavuma (10*) will be back at the crease when the Test resumes on Monday morning.
