England Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad is focusing on the players available to him for next month's World Cup, and not on the absence of Kevin Pietersen.

England Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad has refused to dwell on the fact that Kevin Pietersen will not be part of his squad for the World Cup.

Pietersen is widely regarded as England's most dangerous batsman, but his retirement from the shorter forms of the game began a saga with the ECB that is still ongoing.

Pietersen eventually came out of retirement but was still left out of the World Cup squad, and Broad is instead focusing on the players available to him, including Pietersen's replacement Alex Hales, who scored 99 off 68 balls against West Indies at Trent Bridge in June.

"The planning started, for these games and the World Cup, from Trent Bridge. KP had made himself unavailable for the World Cup and his replacement came in and got the highest score for an English batsman," Broad told Sky Sports News.

"The planning had already been set in place, Alex Hales came in and did very well and that's what we've been focusing on.

"We've got a great squad here and we're really excited about the next month. We've got guys who are hungry and keen to develop their skills, and going to Sri Lanka we're very excited to do that."

England are the reigning champions of the World Twenty20 having beaten Australia in the final two years ago.
