Stuart Broad shrugged off an ankle injury to take three wickets as England were made to work hard in the field against a Sri Lanka Development XI this morning.
Bowler Broad removed Malinda Warnapura and Dilshan Munaweera within the opening five overs in Colombo.
However, Chamara Silva stood his ground, producing a knock of 163 as the Sri Lankans ended day one on 376-5.
Steven Finn eventually took Silva's wicket as the batsman found Jonathan Trott, who took a catch with ease.
Samit Patel was England's other wicket taker, striking Thilina Kandamby's stumps with a powerful delivery.
This is England's final warm-up fixture before their two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts next Monday.
