England captain Alastair Cook admits his disappointment in the manner of Jos Buttler's controversial run out in the series decider which they lost against Sri Lanka.

England captain Alastair Cook has admitted his disappointment over Angelo Mathews's part in Jos Buttler's dismissal in the series decider against Sri Lanka.

The hosts lost by six wickets at Edgbaston on Tuesday, to fall to a 3-2 defeat in the first one-day international series since the reappointment of coach Peter Moores.

Buttler, who was well set on 21 at the time, having scored a record-breaking century in the previous match, was ran out at the non-strikers' end while backing up by Sachithra Senanayake, as Sri Lanka restricted England to 219 all out in Birmingham.

The method of dismissal is within the rules of the game, but has been deemed as being against the spirit of cricket, and Cook has conceded that he was "disappointed" that his Sri Lankan counterpart Mathews did not withdraw the appeal when given the chance to do so by the umpires.

"I think you're going to have to ask Angelo why he did it. I'm obviously disappointed with it," he told Sky Sports News.

When asked if it was something he would do, Cook added: "I hope not, you don't know quite in the spur of the moment about it but you know emotion can get the better of you.

"Until you are put in a situation like that you don't know how you would handle it."

Sri Lanka's series win saw them climb to second in the ODI rankings, behind only leaders Australia.
