England set Sri Lanka a score of 220 to win their deciding ODI at Edgbaston.

England have set Sri Lanka a total of 220 to win their deciding one-day international at Edgbaston.

The two teams started the day with the series tied at 2-2, and it was England who put themselves into bat first before being bowled out with two overs remaining.

Alastair Cook and Ian Bell made a solid start for the hosts, but Bell was the first to go when he was caught and bowled by Ajantha Mendis for 37 in the 15th over.

While Cook continued to add the runs out in the middle, Gary Ballance made little impact at the crease as he was caught and bowled by Lasith Malinga for 10.

A meagre 10 was all that Joe Root had to offer before he was caught by Kumar Sangakkara off the bowling Ashan Priyanjan, while Cook was dismissed soon after for 56 when he was caught behind by Sangakkara following a Sachithra Senanayake delivery.

England were struggling to score quick runs at this point, and they lost another wicket in the 30th over as Eoin Morgan was caught by Mahela Jayawardene off the bowling of Angelo Mathews for 17.

Ravi Bopara was dismissed in comical fashion with 37 overs played as he allowed a ball from Mendis to go between his legs and hit the stumps having made 17 runs.

A moment of controversy came in the 43rd over when Jos Buttler was run out by Senanayake for 21. The batsman, who had been warned earlier, strayed off his crease before Senanayake halted his run up to knock the bails off the stumps, leading to a chorus of boos from the Birmingham crowd.

Chris Jordan made a gallant 30 towards the end of the innings before being run out, while James Tredwell (1) and James Anderson (5) were both dismissed by Malinga with two overs to spare.
