An unbeaten knock of 183 from Hashim Amla helps a dominant South Africa move 18 runs clear of England on day three of the first Test at the Oval.

A unbeaten 183 from Hashim Amla has seen South Africa move ahead of England's first innings total on day three of the first Test at the Oval.

There was also a century for Graeme Smith and a unbeaten knock of 82 for Jacques Kallis as the tourists ended 18 runs clear on 403-2.

Starting on 86-1, Amla quickly made his way to 50 before Smith followed soon after to put his side on 126-1.

The duo continued to play some cavalier cricket at the crease and Smith reached a century on his 100th Test appearance for his country just before lunch.

Amla was next to reach three figures as the frustrated English bowlers had little to work with on the pitch.

The hosts finally made a breakthrough just before tea with the opposition on 260-2 when Smith was bowled by Tim Bresnan for 131.

However, Kallis was next up and soon started finding the boundary and outfield with some typically robust batting.

It got worse for England later in the afternoon as Amla made his way to 150 before Kallis made his 50 off 94 balls under an hour later.

The South African batsmen looked comfortable out in the middle an continued to frustrate the home bowlers before the close of play.
