England post a disappointing 227 in their first innings of the first one-day international against New Zealand.

England have scored a below-par 227 from their innings in the first one-day international against New Zealand.

Openers Alastair Cook and Ian Bell made slow but steady progress in the opening 10 overs and put on 45 runs as they found their feet.

However, Bell was dismissed soon after as he swung wildly at a Tim Southee delivery to edge to Luke Ronchi behind the stumps.

From then on England found runs very hard to come by but wickets fell steadily as no batsman was able to get on top of the game.

Cook followed Bell after making 30, also edging to Ronchi off Southee, before Joe Root and Jonathan Trott looked to steady the ship.

By 25 overs the pair had taken the Three Lions to 104 but as they moved through the gears Root was dismissed bowled by Nathan McCullum.

Trott, on 37, then fell caught by Ross Taylor off the same bowler and Eoin Morgan followed quickly having made just six.

Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes put on another mini-partnership but the former fell for 14 with England on 159 and Woakes's resistance was ended a few overs later for 36.

Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann took England past 200 before the former was bowled by Trent Boult for 25.

Swann was caught off the final ball of the innings to leave England on 227-9.
