England limited-overs coach Ashley Giles insists that selectors are not shortchanging the cricketing public by resting big names for the ongoing one-day series against Australia.

Limited-overs coach Ashley Giles has defended England's decision to rest many of their big names for the ongoing one-day-international series against Australia.

Fifty-over captain Alastair Cook, Ian Bell and Graeme Swann, as well as fast-bowling pair James Anderson and Stuart Broad, have all been given time off to recover from their part in the 3-0 Ashes win this summer.

Instead, Test match prospects such as Ben Stokes, Boyd Rankin and Michael Carberry are being given the opportunity to impress ahead of the reverse tour Down Under, which starts in November.

Some critics have observed that those spectators who have bought tickets for any of the five matches against the Aussies may feel shortchanged by England's selection, but Giles has insisted that there is still plenty of talent on show.

"This is an exciting side to come to watch," Giles told reporters. "[There's] Kevin Pietersen, Michael Carberry is an exciting batsman at the top of the order; then Jonathan Trott, Joe Root, Morgan, Ravi Bopara, Steven Finn - there are some good names to watch.

"Then you have the youngsters. I'd hope the cricketing public would want us to bring through some of our young cricketers and expose them to what is the almost the harshest of environments, which is playing Australia."

Having gone 1-0 down in the series courtesy of an 88-run loss at Old Trafford on Sunday, England have the chance to level the scores in the third match at Edgbaston on Wednesday.
