Graham Gooch targets draw

Graham Gooch remains hopeful that England can claim an unlikely draw on the final day of the first Test against South Africa.

England batting coach Graham Gooch has insisted that South Africa can still be denied victory in the first Test at the Oval.

The tourists require six wickets on the final day, having declared with a first-innings total 637-2 before reducing England to 102-4 at stumps on Sunday.

"We're not winning the Test match, are we? So it's not going our way," said Gooch. "When you've played quite a bit of Test cricket you accept not every game is going to happen for you - and at the moment South Africa are in a dominant position.

"That's stating the obvious. But the game's not over yet - you have to believe you can still get out of this game with a draw. If England achieve that it will be a great performance."

Hashim Amla's unbeaten innings of 311 made him the seventh batsmen to have made a Test triple-century in England. Gooch was the sixth in 1990 - with a knock of 333 against India at Lord's.
