Joe Root targets consistency with bat

Joe Root admits that England need to be consistent with the bat if their aggressive approach is to pay off in one-day internationals.

Joe Root has claimed that consistency with the bat is key if England's fresh approach to one-day international cricket is to be successful.

A superb batting display led England to their highest ODI score of 408-9 on the way to a 210-run triumph over New Zealand at Edgbaston earlier this week, and despite conceding that those efforts could be rare, Root insists that the team will continue to be aggressive.

"Obviously it's not very likely [that we'll score 400 in each game]. The other day it was a very, very good wicket," Root, who scored 104 off 78 balls in the opening game of the series, told reporters. "The key thing is giving ourselves the best chance of making a big score.

"That's something that we've got to try to do more consistently. We need to make sure that we go out there with the same frame of mind.

"We're committed to being very aggressive and we'll take that approach into every match and then see where we're at."

England meet the Black Caps in the second game of the five-match series at The Oval on Friday.
