England beat New Zealand by a record 210 runs in the first one-day international at Edgbaston.

England have beaten New Zealand by a record 210 runs in the first one-day international at Edgbaston.

Eoin Morgan's side posted their highest ever score of 408-9, which proved far too much for their opponents, who finished the day on 198 all out.

England had made a poor start as Jason Roy was caught by Martin Guptill with the first ball of the game, but they soon took charge with captain Morgan hitting 50 off 46 balls.

Joe Root then smashed a hundred off 71 balls before going on to make 104, before Jos Buttler hit the second-fastest ODI century by an English batsman off 66 balls.

Adil Rashid added 69 in a stand of 177 with Butler to set a new seventh-wicket record, as England set a daunting target for the visitors.

It was too much for New Zealand, as they were bowled out for 198 with more than 18 overs to spare, with Rashid and Steven Finn both taking four wickets each.

The second match between the teams will take place at The Oval on Friday.
