Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar took three wickets to put England back on top in day three of the second test in Abu Dhabi.
Earlier on, Stuart Broad's blistering knock of 58 gave England a 70-run lead as they were bowled out for 327, putting on just 120 runs for the last five wickets.
Panesar's consistent deliveries outside the off-stump led to the dismissals of opener Mohammad Hafeez (22), captain Misbah-ul-Haq (12) and Younus Khan (1). The delivery that took care of Khan was a particular highlight, turning viciously before clipping the top of off.
Fellow spinner Graeme Swann took the other Pakistan wicket of the day by bowling Umar through thegate for seven.
At 54-4 Pakistan looked in trouble. but solid knocks from Asad Shafiq (35) and Azhar Ali (46) saw a fifth-wicket stand of 71 put on.
