England batsman Joe Root dismisses concerns that sledging could turn into on-field violence following a recent incident involving Australia's David Warner.

England batsman Joe Root has no concerns that cricket could suffer from on-field violence following a recent incident involving Australia's David Warner.

The in-form batsman has been fined 50% of his match fee following an exchange with India batsman Rohit Sharma.

The incident, which involved Warner telling Sharma to "speak English", occurred during Australia's four-wicket victory in their Tri-Series clash at the MCG.

Former New Zealand cricketer Martin Crowe fears that sledging could turn into physical altercations, but Root has no concerns.

"I can't see it, to be honest," Root told reporters. "Someone will have to be in a really bad place to do that. For me it should only be about scoring runs and taking wickets. It should not be about trying to upset the opposition too much. You should do that with ball or bat.

"There have been a few things that have happened over the last few months that haven't been good for the game but I can't see it leading to a punch-up. It's not ice hockey."

Root and his England teammates are preparing to take on India in their Tri-Series match on Tuesday.
