However, their hopes of victory were crushed within eight overs as England sank to 26-5, with four of England's top six dismissed for ducks, including Joe Root and Ben Stokes.
The remaining five wickets fell for 84 runs as England scraped their way to 110, which represented their 11th lowest ODI total.
To make matters worse, India chased down the small total within 18.4 overs, condemning England to their first-ever 10-wicket defeat at home.

Jasprit Bumrah took the wickets of England's top three before bowling Liam Livingstone, David Willey and Brydon Carse to finish with career-best ODI figures of 6-19.
While Bumrah record the third best figures by an Indian bowler in an ODI game, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan wasted no time in chasing down England's total.
As a result of their fine performance at the Oval, India extended their winning run in ODI matches to four games after beating West Indies 3-0 in their most recent 50-over series.
If they can extend that streak to five on Thursday then they will wrap up their first ODI series victory in England since 2014.

Although he has struggled to find his best form in the T20 series and the first ODI, Jason Roy is expected to keep his place at the top of the batting order for England.
Despite losing heavily at the Oval, England are expected to keep changes to a minimum, with the only alterations likely to occur in the bowling department.
Sam Curran could into the lineup after missing out on Tuesday, and the left-arm seamer would also provide strength in depth to the batting lineup.
England may also assess the pitch before deciding whether to bring the leg-spin of Matt Parkinson into the side for the second ODI.
After scoring 76 off of 58 balls at the Oval, Sharma will continue to open the batting alongside Dhawan, who finished 31 not out in the 10-wicket victory.
Virat Kohli missed the first ODI due to a groin injury, and the 33-year-old is not expected to recover in time for Thursday's contest.
With Kohli sidelined, India are expected to name an unchanged lineup for the second ODI as they look to complete the series victory.
While Bumrah took six wickets on Tuesday, Mohammed Shami managed to dismiss three England batsmen and the pair will be looking to continue that form when they open the bowling for India on Thursday.

Although England have struggled in three of their four matches under Buttler's leadership, we think a batting order stacked with quality will bounce back on Thursday to either set a match-winning score or chase down a total, which would see the hosts level the series at 1-1.
