Australia have been given a target of 317 to chase by England in the fourth one-day international in Perth.
After losing the toss, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell put on 87 for the first wicket before the England captain was dismissed for 44 by Glenn Maxwell.
Bell recorded a run-a-ball fifty before succumbing to Daniel Christian, but Ben Stokes remained at the crease to put on a valuable partnership with Gary Ballance.
The pair put on 52 before Ballance lost his wicket, and Stokes soon followed for 70 as England slipped to 216-5 with 10 overs remaining.
However, an explosive innings of 71 from 43 balls from Jos Buttler, which included four sixes, helped England reach 316-8 off their 50 overs.
