England wrap up a series win over Sri Lanka by winning the second Test by nine wickets in Durham.

England have sealed a series win over Sri Lanka by winning the second Test at Chester-le-Street by nine wickets.

The team took victory on day four of the Test, which also included a historic moment for captain Alastair Cook.

The Essex batsman became the first Englishman and youngest ever in the sport to reach 10,000 Test runs.

The 31-year-old reached the milestone after England were forced into a second innings by Sri Lanka, who surpassed their opponents' total.

The tourists began the day on 309-5 after the follow-on was enforced on Sunday, with a target of 88 runs, but it was expected to be a comfortable morning for England's bowlers.

As it turned out, Sri Lanka reached lunch on 403-6, and their staying power at the crease was largely down to Dinesh Chandimal, who soared to 126 runs before getting bowled out by Stuart Broad.

Rangana Herath also contributed with 61 runs before getting trapped lbw by James Anderson, who took five wickets in Sri Lanka's second innings.

After bowling their opponents out for 475, England needed 79 to win, and they managed to do so thanks to Alex Hales (11) and unbeaten knocks of 47 and 22 from Cook and Nick Compton respectively.

England now have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series.
