Jason Roy is the surprise omission from England's squad for the T20 World Cup later this year.

The 32-year-old, who has made 64 appearances in this format of the game, has endured a poor run of form during the summer for each of England and the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred.

However, the opener would have expected to feature in the 15-man group for the tournament in Australia, which begins towards the back end of October.

Instead, Jonny Bairstow will take his spot at the top of the order, while there is a surprise recall for Test captain Ben Stokes who has not featured for England's T20 side since March 2021.

Despite missing the majority of the summer through injury, each of Chris Woakes and Mark Wood have been included in the squad.

Speaking on the decision to leave our Roy, managing director Rob Key said: "He's a hit a bad patch of form at the worst time.

"I don't see that this is Jason's T20 career over. We still see the 50-over format as his strongest suit, so still see him as very much a part of that setup."

Before the T20 World Cup gets underway, England have 10 fixtures scheduled between September 20 and October 14.

Seven of those matches will take place in Pakistan, with the remaining triple-header coming against Australia on away territory.

A separate squad has been selected for the games with Pakistan in order to manage the workload.
