James Anderson equals Sir Ian Botham's Test record of 383 wickets as England need five wickets after lunch to win the first Test against the West Indies.

James Anderson is one wicket away from becoming England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker after equalling Sir Ian Botham's record in the morning session on day five of the fourth Test against the West Indies in Antigua.

England, who headed into today's play with a 340-run lead, knew that they needed eight wickets to seal a 1-0 lead in the series.

It was a slow start for Devon Smith and Marlon Samuels at the crease as they faced four maiden overs on the bounce, but England found the breakthrough when James Tredwell struck in the 52nd over.

Smith charged at Tredwell with a shot straight to mid-on, which was caught by Gary Ballance, and he was sent back to the pavilion with figures of 65 off 175 balls.

Anderson, who is playing in his 100th Test match, put his name in the history books by equalling Botham's record of 383 Test wickets by dismissing Samuels.

The batsman attempted a big shot off Anderson's delivery, but his effort flew to gully, where Tredwell was placed to launch a diving catch.

England edged closer to victory when Joe Root's lbw on Shivnarine Chanderpaul (13) was given out, following an unsuccessful review from the West Indies.

After lunch, Jermaine Blackwood (19*) and Denesh Ramdin (4*) will return to bat with the West Indies on 162-5 in their second innings.
