Big scores from Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance put England on 247-2 at the close of play on day one of the third Test against India at the Ageas Bowl.

Big scores from Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance have seen England enjoy a strong opening day of the third Test against India at the Ageas Bowl.

Cook was just five runs away from his first Test century since May 2013 when he dismissed, but Ballance was able to pass the 100-run mark as England made 247-2 at the close of play.

The hosts won the toss and reached 78-1 at lunch after Sam Robson was caught by Ravindra Jadeja off the bowling of Mohammed Shami following a knock of 26.

Cook and Ballance then formed a solid partnership at the crease for England, with both hitting half-centuries to put their team on 186-1 at tea.

It looked as if England's captain was going to score a significant century before he was sent back to the pavilion, but Ballance (104 not out) and Ian Bell (16 not out) were able to guide England towards the 250-run mark at stumps.
