Solid scoring in the middle order helps Australia to reach 309-7 in the 49-overs-per-side one-day international against England at Lord's.

Australia have set England a victory target of 310 to win a shortened second one-day international at Lord's.

England, who lost the first ODI at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday, won a delayed toss this morning and opted to bowl in a 49-over-per-side contest.

Steven Finn opened the bowling for the home side and on the second ball of the day removed David Warner from the crease.

It wasn't a wicket, though; the Aussie had to retire hurt after a bouncer clipped and seemingly broke his thumb, bringing captain Steven Smith to the crease earlier than expected.

Smith and Joe Burns put on 40 for the second wicket before the latter was clean-bowled by Finn for 22.

The largest partnership of the innings came from Smith (70) and George Bailey (54), with both men making 50s while at the crease together for the first time in 23 matches.

The duo fell to the spin of Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali respectively, but the middle order of Glenn Maxwell (49), Shane Watson (39) and Mitchell Marsh all contributed quick-hitting scores to help Australia reach 309-7 after 49 overs.

Marsh lost his wicket on the final ball to Ben Stokes after scoring 64 off just 31 balls, powering the tourists past the 300 mark in the final few overs.
