Haseeb Hameed hits an unbeaten 62 as England reach the close of play on day four of the first Test with India on 114-0, giving them a lead of 163 runs.

England have ended day four of the first Test with India on 114-0 after Haseeb Hameed starred with the bat during the start of his side's second innings in Rajkot.

The opening match of the five-Test series is heading for a draw with England only holding an advantage of 163 with three sessions remaining, but Hameed's unbeaten knock of 62 from 116 deliveries has put the tourists in a position where they should not be able to suffer defeat going into the final day.

The 19-year-old - who is making his Test debut - hit five fours and a six as he and Alastair Cook (46*) combined to take the game away from India, who had moved to within 49 runs of England's first-innings total of 537.

India had resumed the day on 319-4 but England soon made headway with two wickets in the first 11 overs of Saturday's play as Ajinkya Rahane (13) and Virat Kohli (40) both fell relatively cheaply in a match which has seen five centuries.

However, Ravichandran Ashwin produced a timely 70 to take his team nearer to England's total and although four wickets from Adil Rashid ensured that England remained ahead, it was not enough for Cook and Hameed to return to the crease without any significant pressure.

England's opening pair delivered, however, and after surviving for 37 overs on a deteriorating pitch, they can now attack India during tomorrow's morning session to give them a chance to chase what is still an unlikely win.
