England are on the brink of suffering a series defeat to India after capitulating during the third day of the fourth Test.

The tourists went into Sunday's play holding a 134-run advantage and with India on 219-7 on an unpredictable pitch in Ranchi.

They ended it having been bowled out for just 145, either side of India accumulating runs with greater ease to move to within 152 runs of victory on Monday.

During the closing stages of day two, India showed resolve after initially being reduced to 177-7, and that continued when Dhruv Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav returned to the crease.

Yadav made 28 from 131 balls before being bowled by James Anderson, but Jurel kicked on to make a magnificent 90 from 149 deliveries, a knock that featured four sixes.

Shoaib Bashir ended with figures of 5-119 on just his second Test appearance, yet the momentum was with India who were 307 all out and now within 46 runs of England.

There were times during England's second innings where they held off India's advances, but Ollie Pope being removed for a first-ball - which in turn made it a three-ball pair - further knocked the stuffing out of the visitors.

Zak Crawley (60) and Jonny Bairstow (30) made valuable contributions, while Ben Foakes stuck around for 80 minutes for his 17, but England would go from 110-3 to 145 all out in 25.4 overs either side of tea.

Nine of the wickets went to Ravichandran Ashwin (5-51) and Yadav (4-22), and the manner of how they had turned the tide with the ball offered encouragement to England, even when only defending a target of 192.

Instead, Rohit Sharma (24) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (16) not only saw out the remaining eight overs, but chipped in with 40 runs too, and it leaves India on course to register a series-clinching victory with one game to spare. body check tags ::
