Number 11 batsman Umesh Yadav struck the winning runs as India narrowly beat West Indies in the first one-day international in Cuttack today.
Yadav hit Darren Sammy for four to secure victory for the hosts after they struggled to chase down Windies' under-par total of 211-9.
Darren Bravo was once again the mainstay of the visitors innings, contributing 60 off 74 balls before being bowled by Suresh Raina.
Pace bowler Kemar Roach then put the Windies in with a chance by blasting away the Indian top order, dismissing Parthiv Patel, Gautaum Gambhir and Virat Kohli as the world champions limped to 59-5.
Rohit Sharma stabilised the innings with 72 but was then caught off the bowling of Kieron Pollard as the responsibility fell to the Indian tail.
Last man Yadav then stepped up to win the game in the penultimate over as India claimed the opening match of the series.
