England will be looking to hit back against India in the second T20 after the Jos Buttler era began with a 50-run defeat.

The hosts are hoping that a return to Edgbaston – where they beat India in the final Test a week ago – will provide inspiration for a win that would level the series.

Match preview

There was a fresh look to the England camp on Thursday, with the team under new management following Matthew Mott's appointment as white-ball coach, while Buttler was named as the new captain after Eoin Morgan decided to retire from international cricket.

Buttler found out in the first T20 international that a job Morgan made look so simple was anything but, with India defending 198 with relative ease.

After seeing four of their seven bowlers concede more than 10 runs per over, England knew they had to get off to a flier if they were to chase down a lofty total.

However, three wickets inside five overs effectively put an end to England's chase before it had even begun, and although the likes of Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan did their utmost to get their side close, they ultimately fell short of the target.

The England captain experienced a rare poor innings that lasted only one ball, but after top-scoring in the IPL and the one-day-international series against the Netherlands, Buttler will be confident of racking up a big score on Saturday.

With only two matches left to play in the series, England know that Saturday's contest is a must-win game if they are to clinch a series victory.

While their opponents are looking to turn around a 1-0 deficit, India will be aiming to wrap up the series with a victory on Saturday.

Hardik Pandya starred with the bat, scoring 51 off 33 balls to help his side set England 198 to win the opening T20 international.

Not content with scoring a half-century, Pandya played a pivotal role with the ball, taking four wickets to guide India to victory.

Thursday's result continued India's impressive form in the shortest form of international cricket, with their 14 T20 matches in 2022 yielding 11 victories.

India captain Rohit Sharma will be pleased with those results, but he will be determined to guide his country to a series victory in England, which will be a significant feather in his cap ahead of the T20 World Cup in October.

As well as claiming the series win, India have the chance to win a fourth consecutive T20 international.

Team News

After failing to trouble the scorers in his first game as full-time England captain, Buttler will be determined to put on a show when he opens the batting alongside Jason Roy.

Harry Brook scored 28 off 23 balls in his first England match on home soil, and the 23-year-old is expected to keep his place in the side.

David Willey was released to play in Yorkshire's T20 Blast quarter-final against Surrey, and after helping his county reach finals day, the bowling all-rounder could come into the side to replace Sam Curran.

With England set to play two games in as many days, Tymal Mills may drop out of the team on Saturday due to his past injury issues, which could present Richard Gleeson with the chance to make his international debut.

As for India, a number of players who featured in the test series are set to return to the squad for the remainder of the T20 internationals.

Former captain Virat Kohli could return to the side to take up a position in the batting order for Saturday's contest.

Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja could replace Axar Patel, while Dinesh Karthik is set to make way for Rishabh Pant, who will take up the gloves.

Jasprit Bumrah was another player who was rested for the first T20, but the dangerous fast bowler is expected to return to the side at Edgbaston.

England squad:Jos Buttler (Captain, wk), Moeen Ali, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Richard Gleeson, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Tymal Mills, Matthew Parkinson, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, David Willey

India squad:Rohit Sharma (Captain), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik

Series so far

First T20: India won by 50 runs
India 198/8 (20 overs)
England 148/10 (19.3 overs)

We say: England to win

England will be determined to level the series on Saturday, and although India are set to welcome back a number of key players, we think that the hosts will make up for Thursday's poor performance by claiming victory in the second T20.
