Ireland have set Pakistan a target of 238 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

In a winner-takes-all Pool B clash at the Adelaide Oval, Ireland won the toss and elected to bat, but they got off to a slow start when Paul Stirling fell for just three runs.

Skipper William Porterfield did manage to find his seventh one-day international ton before being caught out by Shahid Afridi, although none of the other top order batsmen could surpass the 20-run mark.

Ed Joyce (11), Niall O'Brien (12) and Andrew Balbirnie (18) all struggled to build any momentum, with left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz claiming three wickets during Ireland's innings.

Sohail Khan also managed to claim 2-44 as Pakistan restricted their opponents, with Gary Wilson's 29 from 38 balls proving to be the next highest score following on from Portfield's impressive tally to leave Ireland 237 all out.

The winner of this match will finish third in Pool B.
