New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum believes that Martin Guptill's innings of 237 against West Indies is "one of the best" ever recorded in the 50-over format.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has described Martin Guptill's innings as "sublime" after an unbeaten knock of 237 help the Black Caps beat West Indies by 143 runs in the Cricket World Cup quarter-finals.

Guptill's score was the highest ever recorded in a World Cup match, and McCullum admitted that he was in awe of the display that included 24 fours and 11 sixes off 163 balls.

After the match, the 33-year-old said: "The innings we witnessed is probably one of the best we have ever seen in this format. Sublime. Just sublime. I will never forget it. Everybody here is the same.

"We need to play aggressive cricket to compete with the world's best sides, and I am sure the crowd is enjoying the way we are playing. We wanted to make a real statement on the back of Gup's inning, and that's what we did with the ball and in the field.

"We will celebrate Gup's success, the team's success, tonight, and then turn our attention to the semi-final."

New Zealand will play South Africa for a place in the final on Tuesday.
