The West Indies set England a target of 171 runs to win the first of their Twenty20 encounters.

The West Indies have set England a target of 171 runs in the first of their Twenty20 matches at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The hosts made a perfect start to the match as Dwayne Smith smashed a six of the very first ball, pulling Stuart Broad's delivery over the rope at deep square leg.

Three more boundaries and a no ball followed in an expensive first over for the tourists, as the Windies raced to 19/0 before the run-rate began to slow down.

Smith and Chris Gayle were still averaging more than a run a ball, however, until the former was dismissed for 27 in the sixth over off the bowling of Ravi Bopara.

The important wicket of Gayle came in the 11th over as the big hitter was caught lbw by a James Tredwell delivery, departing after making 43 off 35 balls to help his side to 87/2.

Ben Stokes then conceded 19 in another expensive over before Bopara claimed his second wicket of the afternoon, causing Lendl Simmons to pick out Michael Lumb in the field.

Marlon Samuels passed 50 during the course of five straight fours in the 17th over off the bowling of Jade Dernbach as the West Indies built a decent score to finish on 170/3.
