Matthew Crampton has admitted that he and his England teammates must improve if they are to challenge for medals in the men's sprint at the Commonwealth Games.
Crampton and Olympic champion Jason Kenny were reliant on the repechage, where Crampton clocked 10.733 seconds, to progress to the quarter-finals in Glasgow.
The 28-year-old has confessed that the English riders are currently miles behind their rivals from New Zealand and Australia, but did feel better on his second go round the track and is hopeful that he will continue to progress as the competition unfolds.
"It ended pretty well so hopefully I will continue to improve. I'm glad to get into the quarter-finals so I can race some more rounds," he told reporters.
"Qualifying just didn't feel right as I'm at least two tenths of a second off where I thought I would be. The New Zealanders and the Australians are in a different league at the moment.
"All the British have been pretty close to each other in training so we all thought we were going alright. We're all close again but now we're close at the wrong end of the field. Hopefully I'll be better now. I'll be able to get some more rounds in and my form will come round a bit."
Team England's Philip Hindes was knocked out after being beaten by Crampton in the repechage.
