Sophie Thornhill has claimed Team England's first gold of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, defeating local rival Jessica Gallagher in the final of the B&VI sprint.
Earlier in the day the 22-year-old and her pilot Helen Scott had set a new world record over the 200m distance in the qualifier, beating Gallagher's previous record with a time of 10.609 seconds.
The pair faced off again tonight in a best-of-three decider for top spot on the podium but ultimately two races was all it took for Thornhill to ensure her victory.
First Thornhill edged out Gallagher with a time of 11.527 seconds and a margin of 0.167, then a time of 11.994 seconds and a margin of 0.204.
The result means that Team England now finally have their first gold medal from their trip to the Gold Coast following the Brownlee brothers' surprise defeat in the men's triathlon earlier.
