Lance Armstrong ends his stint as Livestrong chairman to allow the cancer-battling charity to continue its work without any negative publicity.

Former American cyclist Lance Armstrong has confirmed that he is to step down as chairman of the charity Livestrong.

The 41-year-old has made the decision just one week after the US Anti-Doping Agency released a 1,000-page report that accused him and several of his teammates of doping during his seven straight successes at the Tour de France up until 2005.

With that in mind, Armstrong has left his position so that the cancer-fighting charity can continue its mission without the publicity that is currently surrounding him.

"This organization, its mission and its supporters are incredibly dear to my heart," Armstrong said in a statement according to The AP.

"Today therefore, to spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmanship."

Armstrong will still be a member of the charity's board.
