Pat McQuaid insists that cycling must be kept "clean" from doping as he bids to be re-elected as president of the UCI.

Head of cycling's world governing body Pat McQuaid has insisted that the sport must remain "clean" from doping as he bids for re-election.

Cycling has been hampered by accusations of doping over the years, during which Lance Armstrong took performance-enhancing substances to clinch a record seven Tour de France titles.

"Cycling has changed since I was first elected as UCI president in 2005," BBC Sport quotes McQuaid as saying in his manifesto A Bright Future for a Changed Sport.

"It is now a global sport. It is now possible to race and win clean. We have travelled a great distance together and we must never turn back from cycling's bright future."

McQuaid has been UCI president for eight years.
