Team Wales cyclist Lewis Oliva is content with his performance in the qualifying round of the men's sprint having recorded a personal best.

Team Wales cyclist Lewis Oliva has expressed his delight at having recorded a personal best in the men's 200m individual sprint at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 21-year-old posted a time of 10.171s at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, putting him in first place at the time, before he was overtaken by Team England's Philip Hindes.

Oliva admitted that it was a blow to lose out to his friend Hindes, but believes that his time shows that he is making valuable progress over the distance - something he wants to repeat in the keirin event.

"It's obviously disappointing to miss out to old Phil boy. We had a bit of a bet on today so I've come off worse. But I can't be too disheartened by that," Oliva told Sports Mole.

"It's good for me to come here after quite heavy training what we've been doing and getting a PB - you can't really argue with that. I think there is more to come later in the season.

"It's annoying where this race is unfortunately with British Cycling's plans going into the winter with World Cups and World Championships, but obviously I can show that I'm still progressing in the 200m, and hopefully I'll see it in the keirin competition as well."

Oliva ended up with the eighth fastest qualifying time, putting him in heat five of the first round.
