Luke Humphries strengthens his position at the top of the PDC Order of Merit by winning the German Darts Grand Prix, beating Michael van Gerwen in the final.

Luke Humphries has recorded a dominant 8-1 victory over Michael van Gerwen to win the German Darts Grand Prix in Munich.

Having failed to win a fourth successive Premier League week on Thursday, the world number one was motivated to make amends over the Easter weekend.

However, Humphries would go on to produce one of the greatest run of averages in a EuroTour event, with his lowest effort being 99.93 in the semi-finals against Gerwyn Price.

Prior to that contest, the world champion defied a 106.44 average from Danny Noppert to win their quarter-final clash by a 6-2 scoreline, and he ultimately found himself in the final against Van Gerwen.

The Dutchman will be encouraged by how he has found some form after an arm injury, whitewashing Joe Cullen in the last 16 and running out a 7-2 victor over Martin Schindler in the semis.

Nevertheless, he was no match for Humphries in the final, as the Englishman dropped just the one leg with an average of 112.66, the second-highest ever recorded in a EuroTour final.

Humphries would hit six 180s, a 170 finish and miss just five darts at a double as he strengthened his hold of top spot in the PDC Order of Merit.

Van Gerwen also opened up a £22,000 lead over Michael Smith in second position, but Price and Schindler remained in fifth and 24th respectively despite their runs to the last four. body check tags ::
